Introduction
In the 1500's, England and Spain were the two most powerful countries in Europe. This led to conflict between them for gold, glory, and land. In order to do that, they had to have a lot of money and gold. They thought that the New World would have tons of gold. Furthermore, Spain was a Catholic country and England was Protestant. They both thought that their religion was right, and they wanted to expand it by going to the New World.
So, England sent many ships to start a colony in the New World. The first four English Colonies were Roanoke Colony, Jamestown Colony, Plymouth Colony, and Massachusetts Bay Colony. The people who went to the New World would have to be brave and work hard. People left for different reasons such as land, gold, religion, tobacco, adventure, and escape England. These people faced many hardships, dangers, and deadly odds. More died than survived.
Knowing that building America was a lot of work is important. The people that left to the New World took a huge risk. It is as scary as if we were going to Mars or another planet, not knowing what is out there and what could happen.
