There were numerous reasons for leaving England and going to the New World. When the first boat of gentlemen left to start a colony in 1606, they left because they wanted to go to find gold. They heard Spaniards were bringing mountains of gold back to Spain. When the English people left to the New World, they expected the gold to be right at their feet. But that is not what happened. An additional reason gentlemen on the first boat left was to have an adventure, they had heard that the New World was beautiful and it had beautiful plants and animals. They wanted to explore the New World, see the beauty that everyone was talking about. There were also those that went to America for bravery and curiosity.
Later, after John Rolfe discovered tobacco from the Native Americans, colonist wanted to go to the New World to grow it. They would import tobacco back to England, sell it, and gain lots of money.
As life went on in Jamestown, there were more boats coming, some settlers on the boat were criminals. The troubled or criminals went to the New World because they would be free. They would free from jail and had two options: start over or continue crime.
The poor went to America because they were promised land, and lots of it. England was a crowded place, people did not own much land. And if they moved to the New World they were promised 500 acres of land.
