The first settlement for the English was not a success. In fact, it was a disaster. But it was the beginning of new settlements in the New World. On board the first ship to the New World there were only men, no children nor women. Walter Raleigh sent soldiers and explorers. The landed in a place that soon was called Roanoke. Roanoke was an island. Soon, the English ran out of food and Sir Richard Grenville had to return to England to get more supplies. The men were very hungry. One morning they ate the dogs porridge, the next day they ate the dogs themselves. Everyone was hungrier than ever. The next day they saw ships and so many questions raced through the colonists minds. Was it Grenville? Are they spanish ships to drive them off the land? It turned out to be Sir Francis Drake, there to save them all. But Ralph Lane, the leader, didn’t want to leave yet. Sir Francis Drake just gave them food, supplies, and a boat to go back to England with. But as he spoke the sky became darker and the waters became fierce. It was a hurricane! They begged Drake to take them with him. They got on the boats and left.
