When the first boatload of settlers arrived in 1607, they started building houses, taking up land, etc. But, when they saw the Native Americans, they called them beast, because of the way they dressed and acted. The English killed some Native Americans. Which angered the Native Americans and the Native Americans would kill the colonist. But when John Smith became leader, there was peace between the Native Americans and settlers. They would trade for food.
But when he went back to England, the Powhatan decided to stop the English from taking their land. So in December in 1609, the Powhatan lay siege on the fort. Since the English were trapped inside their fort, they could not get food or help. This was called the Starving Time. So the English had to burn their houses to keep warm, and ate cats, dogs, and shoes. This lasted from 1609, to 1610. So once John Smith left for England in May 1610, only 60 people were alive out of 500.
A conflict with the Natives Americans, was the Great Massacre of 1622. The Great Massacre was when Pocahontas's, Sachem decided to get rid of the English once and for all. The Powhatans plan was to have the Indians walk up to the houses and act all friendly, then kill the English and scalp them. Instead, a little boy named Chanco heard about this and warned Jamestown. So everyone in Jamestown was saved. But everybody outside of Jamestown, got killed.
