IMPORTANCE is in the air
Though there were many settlers in Jamestown, there were simply 2 people that struc important people who made important contributions to the Jamestown settlement. Those important people were John Smith, brave, strong, and hard working, and Pocahontas, brave, always aware, and beautiful. These two had some things in common and they both were extremely important. If you don’t know who these two people are, then read on and you will soon know who they are and you might be similar to one of them.
John Smith was a wise leader. He was strict to all of the settlers and that was satisfactory because over half of the settlers were gentlemen. Gentlemen are men who don’t work and force others to work for them. John Smith was a born leader so he would not put up with that selfish and laziness. He said, “If any would not work, neither shall they eat.” This statement is 100% excusable because all should work to get there food. For example, If a farmer does not work, he can not eat because he will not be working to get the food in the house and in his stomach. This example is to show that you should work for your food and your money. John Smith is trying to get all of the settlers to work so they get money and have food so they don’t starve. John Smith wanted all to be safe at Jamestown because a safer settlement makes a successful settlement.
John Smith as a child was a farmer so he had a pretty good idea of how to farm and work out in the farm. John Smiths plan is similar to a math equation. All Gentlemen + Farming = Enough food for gentlemen and enough food for the winter. Before John Smith was made the head of Jamestown he was locked up on the ship because a great amount of the settlers hated him for what he did. Some settlers enjoyed him but that was extremely limited. Though everyone hated John Smith, he soon was accepted as the head of Jamestown. When John Smith got to Jamestown, he was being watched in a friendly and admirable way.
A girl named Pocahontas, who was from the Powhatan tribe, kept her eye on John Smith. Pocahontas was 12 years of age when she saw John Smith and the rest of the settlers arrive in Jamestown. She admired him the first time she saw him. Pocahontas was courageous, brave, and beautiful.
When John Smith was captured by Pocahontas's father, the leader of the Powhatan tribe, Pocahontas was brave enough to stand up to her father and tell him to let John Smith free. She strongly cared for him and would not let him get hurt by her own father.
An example of Pocahontas saving John Smith is when some of the tribe members in the Powhatan tribe wanted to kill John Smith but they did not because Pocahontas’s dad listened to Pocahontas (his favorite daughter) and saved John Smith.
John Smith once saved himself but that was only 1 of about 10 times he saved himself. If it wasn’t for Pocahontas saving John Smith so many times, John Smith might have died earlier than when he really died. Now that you know about the two individuals, which individual do you feel most connected to?
In the 1600’s, the Church of England played a big role in the English colony. Did you know people all over Europe were all catholics? King Henry VIII also known as the man who married many wives, wanted to remarry.
Down in Italy in the city of Rome the Vatican where The Pope stayed, The Pope did not allow it because it was against the law to remarry in the catholic religion, back then. So because the king wanted to remarry he made his own church and called it The Church of England also known as the “Anglican Church”. They were called Protestants because they were protesting against the Catholic laws.
