The first Roanoke was not successful. Colonists starved, and wanted to abandon as quick as they could. They tried again and now they brought full families. A reason they did that was because there would be more of a chance if the whole family stayed so no one would just decide to leave. For more settlers to go, he offered 500 acres of land to each family, and hoped this settlement would be a success. When they came back to pick up Grenville’s men, there was nothing but deer and pumpkins. Soon the settlers had nothing to supply themselves. Each of the settlers were tired and hungry. They soon asked governor John White to go back to England and get more supplies. Every one was dedicated to making him go. Of course governor John White did not want to go and leave his family and his granddaughter, but then soon was convinced and sailed to England. On October 16 he landed somewhere in Ireland and found out soon that Spain was in War with England and no ship could leave.
