It all started with King Henry VIII, he was the king after King James. He wanted to get married multiple times, but in the Catholic religion he was not allowed to. So, he made his own religion called Protestant. He then made a church and named it the Church of England. Being Protestant wasn’t very different from being Catholic, so some English decided they wanted to “purify” the Protestant religion, and so they were called Puritans. Others thought that was not enough so they decided to believe that they could speak to God without a bishop or priest. Since they separated more from the Church of England, they were called Saints or Separatists. The Separatists thought that living in England did not give them freedom of religion, so they moved to Holland. Later they were called pilgrims. Pilgrims are people who take trips for religious purposes, and the reason they were called that is because they took a trip for religious reasons to Holland. The Separatists soon became aware that their children were learning Dutch ways instead of English, so they decided to move to the New World.
