A lot of people think that Jamestown failed, but they are wrong. In 1618, John Rolfe found out about a plant called tobacco which they smoked. In England tobacco became a big deal and a high demand. It brought Jamestown a tremendous amount of money. It also brought the England Company money. At that time King James was the king and he did not like to smoke, but all of England became fond of it and he got a lot of money.
The settlers grew the tobacco in Jamestown and they needed people to grow it. The colonists brought African slaves to Jamestown. You might think that they could just make the Native American as slaves, but they already had done that. What had happened was that the Native Americans escaped too easily because they knew their own land so they knew where to go. But for the African slaves, they were new to the land and they didn’t know where to go. When they brought the African slaves they brought women too. You might be thinking, why would they bring women? Well, they brought women because they could get married and have children so they could populate Jamestown. Also, it makes the people living in Jamestown more stable so they wouldn't leave because their family is in Jamestown.
