The great turning point
Why was 1619 a big year for the colonists of Jamestown? There was the first boatload of women. Women could start a family in Jamestown once they arrived. It also stabilized the settlers of Jamestown. Meaning that if the gentlemen had families they would not move or run away from Jamestown. There was another boat, but it was not full of women, instead it was full of Africans. The colonist brought Africans because settlers needed indentured servants. Indentured servants were Africans who traveled to the New World by having someone pay for their journey. When they arrived to the New World, they had to work for five to seven years to pay off for the journey. Later, colonist decide that slaves were better than servants. They thought it was better to have slaves than servants because the slaves would have to work their whole life, but the servants would have to work for a few years than they could run off. They needed slaves also, to grow their tobacco. Growing tobacco was a lot of work and settlers did not want to spend their whole day growing tobacco.
Another event that happened was that people started to own their own land. England came to the New World for getting new land.An additional impact was the first labor strike. In Jamestown, there was not just English settlers their, there was also other settlers like, Dutch, Poles, Germans, etc. And the other settlers wanted the same rights as the English settlers. The last impact on Jamestown was the first lawmakers. The settlers finally created a government and the government finally made laws. The government was called House of Burgesses.
