In the 1500's, America was just discovered. Spain was taking as much land as they could and as fast as they could. England had to move quickly. A man named Walter Raleigh wanted help when the the English wanted to plant a settlements in the New World. So he asked his dear friend Dr. John Dee, who had the “show stone”, to tell him where they could settle. Walter had a sizable amount of questions. He sent out Arthur Barlow and Philip Amadas to go explore and come back with a report. They left England on April 27, 1584. They returned in September with stories and great news. They said that there were women with head dresses made out of solid gold, and they were treated amazingly well. The queen was so overjoyed, that she knighted Walter Raleigh. He became Sir Walter Raleigh. Sir Walter was also excited, and named the new land Virginia after Queen Elizabeth, the virgin queen. Right away he started to plan the next trip.
