In the 1500’s, Spain was settling in South America and Central America. When Spain claimed land in the New World, they also claimed treasures and became rich and powerful from their silver, gold, and pearls. The main reason the English planted a settlement in the New World, was because they wanted to become richer than the Spaniards. England was in competition with Spain at the time because of religious beliefs. They also stole from Spanish ships bringing gold back from the New World. These Englishmen that stole from Spain were called Sea Dogs. England wanted to get its own gold, pearls, and money. They decided to expand land for themselves and start new settlements in the New World. The reason this is important now is because it was the starting of new settlements for the English. Do you think that the English would have made 13 colonies without one failing?
